Dear Friends,
Many of you know that I have a missionary heart. I spent five years of my priesthood living and working in Central America in the country of El Salvador. I loved it.
But you don’t have to travel to another country to be a missionary. You can do so here, at home, by looking for opportunities to put your faith into action.
One of those opportunities is World Mission Sunday, which we celebrate this year on October 24. The second collection taken up on that weekend serves as a worldwide effort to provide for the strengthening of more than 1,000 local churches in Asia and Africa, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe. Through the work of these churches and their witness to Christ, the poor receive practical help and experience God’s Love, mercy and peace.
Pope Francis has taken a verse from the Act of the Apostles as the theme for this year’s World Mission Sunday: “We cannot but speak about what we have seen and heard.” (Acts 4:20) The Holy Father encourages us to reach beyond our usual limits – both physical and spiritual – to spread the love of Christ.
“By its very nature, the life of faith calls for a growing openness to embracing everyone, everywhere,” Pope Francis writes in his message for World Mission Sunday.
Let us all become missionaries by strengthening the Church abroad through a donation to the second collection on the weekend of October 23-24.

Queridos Amigos,
Muchos de ustedes saben que tengo un corazón misionero. Me quedaba cinco años de mi sacerdocio viviendo y trabajando en Centroamérica en el país de El Salvador. Me encantó.
Pero no necesitas a viajar a otro país para ser misionero. Puedes hacerlo aquí, en casa, al buscar oportunidades para poner su fe en acción.
Una de estas oportunidades es el Domingo Mundial de las Misiones, que celebramos este año el 24 de octubre. Esta segunda colecta sirve como un esfuerzo mundial para fortalecer más de 1,000 Iglesias locales en Asia y Africa, las Islas Pacificas, y partes de Latinoamérica y Europa. Por el esfuerzo de estas Iglesias y su testimonio a Cristo, los pobres reciben ayuda práctica y experimentan el Amor de Dios, su misericordia y su paz.
El Papa Francisco ha tomado un versículo de los Actos de los Apostoles para el tema del Domingo Mundial de las Misiones este año: “Nosotros no podemos dejar de hablar de lo que hemos visto y oído.” (Acts 4:20)
El Santo Papa nos anima a ir más allá de nuestros limites usuales — así los físicos como los espirituales — para propagar el amor de Cristo.
Nuestra vida de fe “por su propia dinámica exige una creciente apertura capaz de llegar y abrazar a todos,” el Papa Francisco escribe en su mensaje por el Domingo Mundial de las Misiones.
Que todos llegamos a ser misioneros por fortalecer la Iglesia extendida con un donativo a la segunda colecta en este fin de semana, el 23-24 de octubre.
