About the Synod
Bishop Hicks and the Diocese of Joliet hosted an inaugural Mass, initiating the diocesan phase, on October 17, 2021. The next phase of the synod will take place at the continental level in 2022, and finally it will end at the universal level in Rome in 2023.
Pope Francis’ hope, in line with his emphasis on the Church being intrinsically synodal, is to invite the world (believers, non-believers, the marginalized, the poor, etc.) to participate and talk about how the Church is living out its communion, participation and mission.
The diocesan phase consists of each diocesan Church hosting “listening sessions” for its people. St Matthew Parish created the following list of questions for our parish focus.
Synodal Questions / Preguntas Sinodales (as prioritized by St. Matthew Parish Staff)
1) How is every baptized person called to participate in the mission of the Church, and what hinders them from being active in that mission? ¿Cómo todos los bautizados están llamados a participar en la misión de la Iglesia y qué les impide ser activos en esta misión?
2) How do we promote the active participation of all the faithful in the liturgy? ¿Cómo promovemos la participación activa de todos los fieles en la liturgia?
3) How do prayer and liturgical celebrations actually inspire and guide our common life and mission in our community? ¿Cómo la oración y las celebraciones litúrgicas realmente inspiran y guían nuestra vida común y nuestra misión en nuestra comunidad?
4) How are lay ministries and the responsibility of lay people promoted? ¿Cómo se promueven los ministerios laicos y la responsabilidad de los laicos?
5) What facilitates or inhibits our listening, especially to those who have different views than our own with special attention on listening to women, young people, those in the peripheries, and members of other Christian traditions and denominations? ¿Qué facilita o limita escuchar, a aquellos que especialmente tienen puntos de vista diferentes a los nuestros, como escuchar a las mujeres, los jóvenes, personas de las periferias y miembros de otras tradiciones y denominaciones cristianas?

7) What are particular issues in the Church and society that we can discuss and share, especially hearing from those who have different views, so as to journey and grow together in communal spiritual discernment? ¿Cuáles son los temas particulares en la Iglesia y la sociedad que podemos discutir y compartir, especialmente escuchando a aquellos que tienen diferentes puntos de vista, para caminar y crecer juntos en el discernimiento espiritual comunitario?
8) How are divergences of vision, or conflicts and difficulties addressed? ¿Cómo se abordan los diferentes puntos de visión, los conflictos y las dificultades?
9) When and how do we manage to say what is important to us? ¿Cuándo y cómo logramos decir lo que es importante para nosotros?
